Justin Lieberman subverts and reframes images from the media and popular culture to challenge the hierarchical systems ingrained in modern culture. This kind of technique has long been used by Lieberman, and in earlier bodies of work it has been expressed through, to mention a few, the identifiable systems of advertising, furniture design, outsider art, home shopping television, art conservation, corporate franchises, and taxonomy exhibition. Lieberman modifies readymade images and materials, such as newspaper clippings and ads, by painting, collaging, and merging them in a distinctive manner influenced by ideas of excess and transgression. Lieberman prefers the handcrafted over the mass-produced.
Jusstin Lieberman (b. 1977 Gainsesville, FL) attended Yale University and School of the Museum of Fine Arts. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
