Martos Gallery is pleased to announce a special presentation of polaroids by Michel Auder. These images, taken between 1978 and 1982, offer a glimpse into the artist’s turbulent early years in New York and beyond. Family portraits, brushes with the famous, and floral arrangements are just a few of the subjects in the 200 photos on view. Auder produces a stream of images that measure the vibrancy of a life lived in awe of the world. He is attuned to certain frequencies that require unbidden observation, producing montages of moving and still images. Auder constantly adjusts his process in accordance with technological updates, however, maintaining his predilection for the poetic and sincere. He captures his surroundings with epistolary care, divining his internal world via reflections from the one outside. For Auder, making photographs and films is a surreal engagement with vulgarity, freedom, and the everyday. By viewing his prolific body of work, one learns new ways to view the city and those who inhabit it. His polaroids are preservations of his life’s history, marked with sociality, deviant behaviors, romance, and happenstance.
